Unusual Romantic Weekends Away In The UK

Whether you’re looking to spend a few days away from the kids, want to reignite the spark in your relationship or just want some quality time together, a romantic weekend away is just the ticket. But for most of us, it always involves the same things; a nice hotel, fancy food, lots of wine, perhaps a show; it can get pretty repetitive.

But if you look closely, you will find that there are lots of unusual romantic weekends away right here in the UK. If you and your significant other want to do something a little different, we have a list of some weird and wacky romantic getaways.

Loveland Farm - Devon

With a name like Loveland, this seems like the obvious choice for a romantic getaway, doesn’t it? And you’d be right in thinking so. Situated on the coast in the stunning area of North Devon, Loveland Farm is an eco-friendly break that’s ideal for couples.

This is something of a glamping experience where you will stay in a pod which Loveland calls an ecodome. There are different styles of pods including those with a Scandi theme and many visitors have claimed that these are among the most romantic on the site. If you are looking to surprise that special someone, I’d highly recommend this.

Inside the pods, you will find a gorgeous four poster bed (who doesn’t want one of these on a romantic break?) There’s also a wood burning stove so you can get cosy on those chilly evenings. You’ve even got a kitchen where you or your loved one can cook up a storm.

While you are on a site with other people, the way that the pods are elevated above the ground makes it feel as though you are in your own little world. But the main draw of Loveland is that it prides itself on being sustainable and eco-friendly, so if this is something that’s important to you, it's a good choice. They use compost toilets and grow pretty much all of their own produce on the farm which you do have the option to purchase

The Hobbit House - Sussex

Are you and your partner mad about Lord of the Rings? If you are then you cannot miss out on the Hobbit House in Sussex. The accommodation is exactly what it sounds like; one of those quirky little shire houses from the books and movies which is located right in the heart of the Rother Valley.

The Hobbit House is something of a novelty and has some breathtaking features that really do transport you to another world. The house has vaulted ceilings and a surprisingly spacious open plan living area as well as that all important wood burning stove.

While this is a guide on romantic getaways, if you wanted to make it a double date, the house does have two en-suite bedrooms.

There’s plenty to do nearby with Bodiam Castle just a stone’s throw away as well as the towns of Winchelsea and Rye within driving distance. You might indulge in a spot of tennis or explore some of the many walking routes. When you’re done for the day, return to your little Hobbit House where you can relax in the hot tub.

The Edge - Cornwall

If there is anywhere for couples that is going to offer romantic sea views then The Edge is it. Located on a cliff in Whitsand Bay, your stay will include breathtaking views and the perfect spot for not being disturbed since this accommodation is in a very secluded location. It’ll just be you and your loved one.

The Edge has everything you will need to enjoy a quiet weekend without ever having to leave the accommodation. There is a hot tub where you can relax with a glass of champagne while looking out over the ocean.

Even if you aren’t looking to spend time outdoors, the entire house has floor to ceiling windows so you’ll be able to get a great view from indoors as well. For seclusion, relaxation and romance, there’s no better place.

Stargazer’s Wagon - Hertfordshire

Do you prefer a more rustic accommodation? If you do then the Stargazer’s Wagon will surely get you in the mood for love. If you’re an outdoorsy couple then this is also a prime location as it gives you lots of exposure to Mother Nature and being in a rural area, you’ll have plenty of scope to explore.

Hertfordshire itself has a lot of things to do so if you want to check these out then you’re perfectly placed to do this. However, if it’s a bit of peace and quiet you’re after then the Stargazer’s Wagon has got you covered. It’s totally off the grid but feels somewhat luxurious, especially when you consider the size.

At 27 feet long, the wagon has ample room for a couple without feeling as though you’ve lost one another in a mansion. But what’s really interesting is the history of this building; it used to belong to a German ghost train attraction back in the 1940s. It’s very comfortable inside with leather sofas and a fully equipped kitchen.

There are also an array of twinkling fairy lights around the place to make a more romantic atmosphere as well as a super comfortable double bed with lots of throws, blankets and pillows.

But you didn’t think that I’d leave out the best part, did you? Outside of the Stargazer’s Wagon is a stunning wood fired hot tub; the perfect place to kick back after a long day of exploring the local area. And of course, this allows you a perfect view of the night sky which is what this accommodation is all about; where do you think it got its name?

Murder Mystery Weekend - Various Locations

If chilling out and doing nothing isn’t up your alley then you might like to take your romantic weekend to the next level and become detectives. There are lots of murder mystery breaks dotted around the UK but this one from Virgin Experience Days is one of the best and has a choice of four locations so you can join in the fun no matter where in the UK you are.

The only drawback of this weekend is that you only have one night included but of course, you can always book an additional night in the hotel if you want a Friday and Saturday away.

When you arrive, you will be served with cream tea and begin to understand what the mystery is all about. The story, and your detective skills, will then draw out across the rest of the day and into the following morning so this break will certainly keep you and your partner on your toes. What’s more, you won’t know which guests are genuine and which are actors!

As well as the fun of solving the mystery, you’ll be treated to a three course evening meal and a full breakfast so everything is included.

The Secret Garden Pods - South Wales

You will be amazed at just how secluded and private these little pods feel despite the fact that they are on a plot with several others. This is thanks to the maze of hedges and walkways that help to keep each pod separate. It’s great if you want the best of both worlds having privacy but amenities to hand when you need them.

For couples who love the beach, this is a great spot as you are as close to the coast as you could ever be. And while the weather isn’t always reliable in Wales, the beaches are some of the best in the UK so put on your kagool and go explore!

Your accommodation, as I have mentioned, is set within a hedged garden and features a double bedroom with its very own patio where you can share a bottle of wine on a summer’s evening. The decor is minimal yet feels very luxurious and everything is super clean and comfortable with a bed that you’ll want to take home!

Anne’s Hut - Monmouthshire

Let’s stay in Wales for our next offerings; Anne’s Hut which is located in the stunning county of Monmouthshire. The hut comprises two smaller huts which are linked by a decked area and if it’s peace and quiet you’re looking for, this is an amazing spot.

The hut is set in a meadow alongside woodland so it’s ideal for nature lovers and you’ll really feel as though you’re getting away from it all. However, there are plenty of things to do in the nearby areas such as exploring the ancient area of Penterry and heading out across the Wye Valley. Go slightly up above the hut and you’ll find the area which used to house a Roman fort and that offers incredible views across the valley.

When it comes to relaxing, Anne’s Hut certainly has everything you need. Sit out of an evening on the deck and light the included fire pit or lounge in one of the hammocks. If the weather isn’t great, you’ll find an aromatic wood burning stove indoors where you can cuddle up and have a hot chocolate.

If you’re not in the mood for cooking then why not hop in the car and head 20 minutes down the road where you will find a Michelin restaurant as well as plenty of other places to eat and drink.

The Four Sisters Boatel - Edinburgh

There is something super romantic about staying on the water but if you don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere then staying in the historic city of Edinburgh allows you to combine the two. The Four Sisters Boatel is a 4 star houseboat that is located smack bang in the middle of the city.

You’ll find it on Edinburgh Quay which gives you an excellent base to explore what the capital of Scotland has to offer. The famous Princess Street is just a ten minute walk from the boat and you’re just as close to the world famous Edinburgh Castle.

For foodies, you’re right in the thick of it as there are an enormous amount of restaurants and bars all within walking distance of the Four Sisters Boatel. Although, if you feel like having a night in, the boat is kitted out with a kitchen and bar so you won’t need to step foot on shore.

Now, while this is a beautiful place for couples, it’s also worth pointing out that there are two bedrooms, one of which includes a bunk bed so if you’re planning a family getaway as well, this might be worth considering.

Edward The Railway Carriage - Norfolk

Once upon a time, Edward was a goods wagon but he now proudly serves as one of the most romantic and unusual getaways in the UK. Designed as an eco friendly glamping pod, Edward is luxurious but also full of character and heritage.

The carriage used to be responsible for carrying airy products down to London and this is a theme that is evident throughout the accommodation. But it’s not overwhelmingly railway themed so even if that isn’t something that interests you, you won’t feel put off.

The carriage entrance is a set of French doors which open up onto a stylish and relaxing living space. There’s everything you need to chill out and unwind including some incredibly comfortable sofas and a wood burner for those chilly evenings. But when the weather is better, you can step out onto the large decked area and enjoy the view. There’s even a fire pit out there to take the chill off because in the UK, it can be cooler once the sun goes down even in the height of summer.

One thing I should point out is that there isn’t a dedicated bedroom. Instead, your comfortable sofa pulls out into a bed but there is a shower room although everything is quite compact. The carriage is powered by solar panels so is great for eco warriors and if you’re an animal lover, you and your partner can also bring along the dog.

The Knoll Tower - Western Under Lizard

For couples with a love of history, there is no better place to stay than The Knoll Tower located on the border between Staffordshire and Shropshire. It is truly an experience unlike any other and since it dates back to 1865, you’ll have a very historic weekend away.

From the top of the tower, you are rewarded with breathtaking views right across to the Welsh borders and the gardens around the tower were designed by none other than Capability Brown himself!

When you get hungry, you can behave just like the Lord and Lady of the manor and won’t have to worry about cooking since there is a deli and grill on the estate! To get there, you just need to take a short stroll through the gardens. That said, this is a self catering accommodation so there are facilities for cooking if you prefer.

The Knoll Tower once served as a hunting lodge but today is kitted out with everything a romantic couple would need for their weekend together. There’s plenty of space too so you won’t get under each other’s feet; the tower is set across three floors and when you want to get out, just head over to Weston Park stately home where you can discover history, heritage and culture and you’ll also find plenty of events on over the year so be sure to check out the website.

But what’s really special about this accommodation is how welcomed you are by the estate staff. On your arrival you will receive a meal prepared by the expert chefs that is ready in your accommodation. Any vegetables on the meals here are grown on the estate within a walled garden so you know where your produce is coming from.

You will also receive a welcome hamper that contains everything you need for your stay including biscuits, bread, milk, cheese and even a bottle of wine! If you want somewhere that’s going to ensure you’re well looked after, The Knoll Tower is the perfect choice.

Conclusion

You can’t beat getting away from it all and relaxing with that special someone. But most of us seem to end up going on the same romantic weekend away time and time again. The UK is filled with exciting and unusual accommodation where you and your partner can discover something totally new. Whether you’re looking for absolute tranquillity or a city break, there’s an unusual place to stay for all tastes.
